We are about to embark on Step 8. If you do not have a sponsor, please stop now, find a sponsor, go back to Step 1 and work each step with him or her. Most of us are so focused on Step 9 that we forget that a thorough Step 8 is the key to making amends with dignity and, certainly, less fear. Keep in mind that the steps are in order for a reason.
We did not put ourselves at the top of the list, even though we hear all the time at A.A. meetings that you should be at the top of your amends list. The amend we make to ourselves is that we are in the program of Alcoholics Anonymous enjoying the rewards of a brand new way of living.
Does God remove all our defects of character that we ask Him to? It seems not. Sometimes we think something is a defect of character when it might be right for us, like a mole on our cheek. Maybe we haven't yet learned enough from our defects to really be ready to have them removed, even though we think we are. The point is that we are to ask God to displace our own character with the character He chooses us to have.
I worked the job I love (when I’m not hating it), and I was able to be there for my family. There’s the forest. And the forest is only beautiful through the trees which make it up, something a friend reminded me today.

Defects don’t just disappear because we are ready. We have to be willing to have them removed, and only praying to our Higher Power is going to make that happen. We cannot wish them away. True, some will be easy but the ones most engrained in our person, the ones that protected us from the real world, the ones that encouraged our addictions, are the difficult ones. These are the demons which could lead us right back to the insane existence from which we finally emerged.
If your mom has passed, there’s really no reason why you can’t still honor her on Mother’s Day. There’s an old saying: “Grief is just love with nowhere to go.” Here are some ways you can celebrate your mom’s memory and give that love somewhere to go.
Prayer and meditation, service work, and rigorous honesty are important in building a vital spiritual life. But there are other practices that we don’t often think of as spiritual, that are also key in healing addiction. Attitudes, beliefs and practices that strengthen our life force, also strengthen our spirit and energize our commitment to getting well.
Keep in mind that it is not necessary, for newcomers to talk about every resentment or selfish act, or each person he or she has ever lied to or harmed for the inventory to be thorough. The objective is to get to “causes and conditions”. Sometimes it takes only a few incidents to make clear which short-comings have kept the newcomer blocked from an intimate, two-way relationship with the “One who has all power.”
