Adrian’s Perspective: Step 6

By Adrian, Renascent Alumni

Step 6 says, “We were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.”

This to me is a very powerful step, because once I finished Step 5, where I “admitted to God, to oneself, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs,” I can then ask the God of my understanding to remove all of my defects of character.

When I came into the program of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), I was full of blaming others, and full of self. When I did wrong to others, I would blame what had happened to me as a child for my behaviors, and not want to take any responsibility.

On Monday, June 12, 2023, that all changed. That’s the day I went back to treatment to learn more about my disease, but also about the trauma that I tried to sweep under the rug.

I was told three things at Renascent:

  • Get a sponsor
  • Find a home group
  • Do the Steps.

And I did all three. Because of three simple things, I now sponsor today, and I’m 703+ days clean and sober. Today, I have a great contract with my High Power. And to me that’s an amazing feeling, we’re I can turn my life and my care and will over to the God of my understanding. But the only way to fully understand how these steps actually work, one must do the work.
