One of the experiences that changed how I understood Step 10 happened during my first vacation in recovery.
I was at an all-inclusive resort with a friend, and I was very conscious of being surrounded by alcohol. One day, I ordered a drink that accidentally came with alcohol in it. I took a sip before realizing what had happened, and I immediately panicked. I thought I had ruined almost a year of sobriety.
My friend and I went back to the room and read through Step 10 together. By the end of it, she looked at me and said, “I wish I was an alcoholic — this is fantastic.”
That moment stayed with me because it showed me how much the program offers beyond just “not drinking.” For me, Step 10 has become a daily practice of checking in, staying aware, and starting and ending the day with gratitude. It reminds me to stay honest about my actions, make amends when needed, and pay attention to where I’m at emotionally.
Years later, my husband and I still come back to Step 10 during difficult moments. During a recent challenge, we sat down together and read through it again. It helped bring us back into the present moment and focus on what we needed to do instead of getting caught up in fear or frustration.
For me, Step 10 continues to be something I can always return to, no matter what life is bringing. It’s a great recipe for living well day to day.
