Joel’s Perspective: Step 5

Step 5: “Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.”

Step 5 is where I learned what real honesty feels like.

Up until then, I had carried everything alone. Not just the drinking, but the shame, the resentment, the things I’d done that I wasn’t proud of.

Step 5 asked me to do the opposite.

I sat down with my sponsor and trusted him with everything. I went through my list of resentments – every person I felt wronged by – and then looked at my part in each relationship. I said things out loud that I had never told another human being.

They say to give yourself an hour after you to do this just to make sure you’ve said everything you want to say.  I cried for that hour. Not because I was being judged, but because I wasn’t.

There was forgiveness in that room. Once I’d said everything I needed to say, I felt absolutely weightless. I wasn’t pretending anymore. I wasn’t hiding.

Step 5 taught me that honesty isn’t about punishment.  It’s about freedom. When I stopped running from my past and owned my part in it, I could finally move forward.
