Jason’s Perspective: Step 2

Hi friends! My name is Jason D. and I’m going to share about my approach to Step Two: We came to believe that a power greater than ourselves can restore us to sanity. This step is so special to me in my recovery because it was the step that literally restored my sanity.

When I came to Renascent I was broken, beat, and mentally scarred from my addiction. I had suffered three drug-induced psychotic breaks and was actively hearing auditory hallucinations. I was also suffering from a pain inside my head that had been there for seven years since my first psychotic break. I was not in a state of good health and I probably should have been put into a psychiatric institution for the rest of my life. Instead, I let the councillors (angels) at Renascent deal with me instead.

I learned that the power of this Step combined with your conscious knowledge of your rock-bottom is enough to cause miracles. While I was in Renascent, we were going over Step Two, and along with the exercises the counsellors provided us, I started to heal. The pain in my head started to reside and to this day I believe a Higher Power took that away from me.

I call Step Two my miracle step because today I am completely free from the symptoms of my mental illness, along with my clean time and the help of the program, I have a life I enjoy. I am forever grateful of the men and women (angels) at Renascent Paul J. Sullivan Centre because they are the reason I have the life I have today.

Step Two doesn’t require us to believe in a religious God nor does it require us to believe in an entity for that matter. It requires us to believe in a power greater than ourselves. That can be an omnipresent power, a benevolent power, a power that steers you away from temptations and urges to use. This is a spiritual, non-religious program, you are free to create your own Higher Power if you wish.

Here’s a joke that I’d like to share with you:
