Alumni Perspective: Embracing Humility

By Corey S., Renascent Alumni

Having humility is the key principle for Step 7 – giving up on self-will and building a reliance on God’s will to guide me through life. Step 7 has now become part of my nightly routine. Every evening before bed I reflect on my day and make a mental inventory of the good and bad. Was I selfish or dishonest?

After this self-reflection I say the Seventh Step Prayer – “My Creator, I am now willing that you should have all of me, good and bad. I pray that you now remove from me every single defect of character which stands in the way of my usefulness to you and my fellows. Grant me strength to go out from here, to do your bidding. Amen”.

Over time, I can evaluate which character defects keep occurring and work to make the changes needed to correct those behaviours.  This process of having humility in myself and my actions keeps me spiritually fit and helps me become more connected to my high power. By doing so, I can be of better service to those around me. This daily work keeps me centered.

Step 7 has given me freedom from pride, arrogance and ego and allowed me to operate a life with humility.
